- Select two brushes to be used for each animal. Label brush sleeve with the name of animal being sampled.
- Before collecting sample, make sure that the animal does not have food in its mouth and that it has not recently been suckling. If the animal has been eating, wait 15 minutes and then let it drink water, or wash its mouth with water. Do not sample nursing pups. The mother's milk contains white blood cells that are present in the mouth of the suckling pups. DNA from animals other than the one being sample may provide erroneous or ambiguous results. If nursing pups must be sampled, they should be removed from the mother for 10 to 15 minutes prior to sampling. Sample ONE animal at a time. If samples are to be collected from several animals in the same session, be sure that steps are completed for each animal individually, before starting to sample another. To prevent cross contamination, do not allow other dogs to interfere while collecting from the intended dog. When sampling more than one dog, wash your hands between dogs to prevent any cross-contamination.
- For each brush, open the sealed tubing and grasp the plastic handle, gently pulling the brush out of the sleeve. DO NOT TOUCH THE BRUSH.
- Steady the dog's head by holding the dog's head with one hand or holding it against your body. Collection may be easier if another person is available to assist. Should the dog seem unwilling or uncooperative, arrange for collection by a veterinarian, precaution should be taken to avoid being bitten.
- Gently lift the lip and insert the brush between the dog's cheek and teeth. Firmly rotate the brush against the cheek for approximately 10 seconds. Do not take sample from teeth or gums. The goal of sampling is to collect cheek cells, not saliva or material from the teeth or gums.
- Let the brush air dry for several minutes before inserting into the labeled sleeve. DO NOT BLOW ON THE BRUSH.
A minimum of 2 brushes must be submitted for each animal.
